ARTIST STATEMENT – MILICA TIČERIĆ

My work deals with issues of solitude and isolation in modern society. I use the medium of photography and I create my photographs with an analogue camera. Through cinematic self-portraits, I am portraying hyper feminine characters which are experiencing feelings of sadness, loneliness and invisibility. Images are taken with 35mm analogue film camera, digitally scanned, printed and transformed in cyanotype prints or lumen prints.

I initially used self-portraiture as form of art therapy, but later I discovered that it is a matter of convenience to rely on yourself to create new work.  The goal of my artwork is to tell a story about deepest personal existential crisis form female perspective. My intention is to find an appropriate position where female sadness can be expressed in the modern art.

Further in my work I am trying to examine the use of new and outdated technologies, while still focusing on female isolation in urban areas.

My choice of media allows me to experiment and play with perception of time, by going back and forwards from “outdated” analogue technology, useless computer motherboards to new and exciting modern equipment as micro screens. By bringing in modern elements with traditional printing techniques as cyanotype printing, I am trying to ask questions if fast technological development is causing social isolation? Can technology offer us solutions for solitude crisis?
